SCIENCE 9:00-12:00 $60.00 per quarter (a quarter is 7 weeks)
1st quarter: SIMPLE INVERTEBRATES: Yes, all those little ishy-squishy things. But like them
or not, they play a foundational role in keeping the natural world beautiful. We'll look at some of the standard critters
we are familiar with, such as the earthworm, but we'll also see some bizarre creatures you don't find in the wilds of PA.
(Through the magic of mail-order science companies we can get some really neat creatures to observe.) We'll do a
soil scavenger hunt, plus a possible field trip to collect some creature to bring back
to our microscope lab. 2nd quarter: FOOD SCIENCE:
This is an introduction to the chemistry of the things we eat. We'll find out what types of molecules
foods are made of, how stirring, kneading and baking changes their chemistry, the role of pH, plus more. Possible
field trip to Penn State food science lab and the creamy. 3rd quarter: HUMAN
BODY, HEALTH AND FIRST AID:
We'll do an overview of body systems and focus on how to keep them healthy. Basic first aid will also be covered as
well as basic fire safety. (This class will completely fulfill your Health/safety requirements.) "Children's
Atlas of the Human Body" provided as at-home reading text. 4th quarter: ROCKS AND MINERALS: An introduction to rocks, minerals, and geology. We'll do all the standard
rocks and mineral experients, make mineral crystal models, look at glow-in-the-dark
rocks and find out how they work, and perhaps delve into volcanoes a bit, too. We've
got a pretty good rock and mineral collection at our disposal, so it should be very hands-on.
REASON TO WRITE JR.
12:30-2:30 $40.00 per quarter (a quarter is 7 weeks)
1st quarter: AFRICA Explore the not-so-dark continent. Plenty to write about here! We'll read some African folk tales as
well as looking at the geography and people groups of Africa. 2nd
quarter: MUSIC HISTORY A
brief overview of how we got from ancient drum beats to modern rock. We'll likely have a good selection of instrument
demonstrations in class each week, also. (Will fulfill music education requirement.) 3rd quarter: ANCIENT EGYPT People all over the world love to study ancient Egypt. We all love heiroglyphs, mummies and pyramids.
This should be a fun topic to write about. 4th quarter: ANCIENT ROME Maybe not quite as much fun as Egypt, but critically important to our understanding of modern history. Some
people say the Romans were the first modern society. Understainding Roman history is an important key to understanding US
history. (But we'll make if fun, too.) PHYS ED 2:30-3:30
